NFL: WASHINGTON REDSKINS at DETROIT LIONS (9/27)

PRO FOOTBALL — September 27

WASHINGTON at DETROIT
(Redskins -6.5, Total 38.5) — This is a time of learning for Matthew Stafford and a lot of the Lions’ young players. [private] Stafford has along way to go, as he’s been less than 51% accurate and has been intercepted five times. Detroit has faced Drew Brees and Brett Favre in its two games, but Washington QB Jason Campbell is a far cry from that. Campbell is a 69% passer, but where are the touchdowns? Last week’s performance against St. Louis, which produced 362 yards but just nine points, is cause for concern. Clinton Portis may have to get more involved; he has 141 yards in the two games, but he may need more. Washington also need more pressure, as they’ve record just two sacks. At least Detroit coach Jim Schwartz, who was defensive coordinator in Tennessee last year, should know how to deal with Albert Haynesworth. In their last ten games, the Redskins have topped 20 points only once, which puts a team in a tough situation when they’re laying this many points on the road.

PRO HOCKEY — June 12
Game 7 – Stanley Cup Finals

PITTSBURGH at DETROIT
(Red Wings -200, Penguins +165, Total 5.5) – We like to take advantage of inviting prices whenever we can, but Detroit has just been too strong at Joe Louis Arena to pass up. The Penguins have been resilient in being able to bounce back from their debilitating defeats to win games at the Mellon Arena, but the Wings have been too strong to give away the home ice advantage. Sidney Crosby has been haled to just just one goal and two assists in this series, and has gone without either at the Joe in the three games that were played there, amassing eight shots on goal. In a series where there have been only 28 goals scored, he has a a minus-7 plus-minus, and Evgeni Malkin has not been much more effective, with just a goal and an assist to show for his three away games in the Finals. Credit the defense of Henrick Zetterberg, last year’s Conn Smythe winner, and Pavel Datsyuk, the possible MVP this season, who has valiantly returned from an injury to become a factor.

Stanley Cup Finals – Game 3

DETROIT at PITTSBURGH
(Penguins -165, Red Wings +145, Total 5.5) — Chris Osgood has been the star thus far for the Red Wings, stopping 62 of 64 shots, and Sidney Crosby has been relatively silent in the series’ first two games. But the Penguins have not played badly, as strange as that may sound; they have put a lot of pressure on the Detroit end. Scoring opportunities have been blown, but that kind of thing may change with the shift over to the Mellon Arena. Of course, the other side of the coin is that the Wings have been doing a great job on Crosby, and the Penguins dodged a bullet when they found out that Evgeni Malkin as not going to be suspended for the brawl he got into toward the end of Game 2. The tough news for the Red Wings is that MVP candidate Pavel Datsyuk will probably miss another game with a foot injury, but Detroit can adapt. They’ve shown it already. The key guy here is Henrick Zetterberg, who has been a pain in the neck for Crosby to deal with. Meanwhile, we’re talking about a Detroit team that had a 67% won-lost mark on the road during the season. They are mentally tough enough, and the price is attractive.
