NCAA Basketball FREE PLAY: VANDERBILT at KENTUCKY (1/30)

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — January 30

VANDERBILT at KENTUCKY
(Kentucky -8.5, Total 154) — Obviously few players on the college basketball scene are as gifted as John Wall. And John Calipari, for all of the questionable recruiting he’s done, does seem to have put together a powerhouse at once-defeated Kentucky. Wall has helped make Patrick Patterson a 61% shooter, and DeMarcus Cousins combined with him to make for a formidable front line. But Vandy has some size of its own, with the inside-out 6’11″ duo of Festus Ezeli and AJ Ogilvy, who can bring the Wildcat big men out farther with his ability to shoot. Add freshman John Jenkins (49% from three-point land) to the mix and they have a people who can keep Wall & Co. plenty busy. Kentucky’s fab frosh does have a tendency to turn the ball over (SEVEN times against Auburn, for example) and he can get beat off the dribble on defense. Don’t count on Vandy, which has covered seven of its last eight, and is 6-1 ATS on the road, to be intimidated by the surroundings at Rupp Arena; they’ve split with the ‘Cats on the last four visits to Lexington.

NBA Basketball FREE PLAY: PHOENIX SUNS at UTAH JAZZ (1/25)

Monday, January 25th, 2010

PRO BASKETBALL — January 25

PHOENIX at UTAH
(Jazz -7, Total 221.5) — Phoenix was unable to get the cover against a tired, thin Golden State team on Saturday, and the Suns’ level of play continues to sink to the point where they will once against be fighting for their playoff lives come April. Utah, on the other hand, is on a bit of a roll, going 7-0-2 ATS in its last nine games, off a day of rest following a 61% shooting effort against New Jersey, allows just 96 points a game at the Energy Solutions Arena. Since Andrei Kirilenko was inserted back into the starting lineup, Utah has gone 5-1 straight-up and is much tougher to score on.

NCAA Basketball FREE PLAY: WESTERN KENTUCKY at TROY (1/21)

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — January 21

WESTERN KENTUCKY at TROY
(Pick’em) — Troy has lost three of its last four games, but they’ve got the scheduling advantage over WKU, which is playing its third game in five days and is taking its second trip in the last three. The Hilltoppers showed some fatigue in Monday’s lost at Middle Tennessee, shooting just 34%, and the Trojans have the three-point shooters (three starters at 42% or better from arc) to extend the lead if WKU gets cold again. keep in mind that the ‘Toppers have covered just one of last seven road games.

NCAA Basketball FREE PLAY: BAYLOR at KANSAS (1/20)

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — January 20

BAYLOR at KANSAS
(Kansas -14, Total 148) — Kansas has played as if it was taking no prisoners in the two games since the loss to Tennessee, blowing away both Nebraska and Texas Tech. And they may seem capable of running Baylor off the court as well. But they won’t have a cakewalk against this Bears team, which exhibits great guard play, can match three-pointers with the Jayhawks (7.9 per game) and surprisingly suffocating defense (36% FG’s allowed). Kansas has won two of the last three, but by ten points apiece, and the Bears outplayed them in 71-64 victory in last year’s Big 12 tourney. With wins over Xavier, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, this team won’t lack for confidence, and with new front court star Ekpe Udoh (11.4 rebounds and 4.4 blocks a game!), Baylor has someone who can trade punches and make life difficult for All-America candidate Cole Aldrich.

NCAA Basketball FREE PLAY: GEORGE MASON at JAMES MADISON (1/16)

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — January 16

GEORGE MASON at JAMES MADISON
(James Madison -2) — There is most likely no 1-2 punch in the Colonial Athletic Association that quite matches what JMU has in Julius Wells, the sizzling sophomore and long-range shooter, and Denzel Bowles, a transfer from Texas A&M. Bowles is the big man, averaging 23 points in eight games since becoming eligible. Just as importantly, he’s added the shot-blocking element that had been lacking. Wells has hit a load of three-pointers; in fact, he’s made 27 in his last six games. George Mason has hung in there with good teams, when you consider one-point losses to the likes of Villanova and Dayton, not to mention wins over Georgia Tech and Old Dominion. But they have been absolutely hammered in true road games against Radford and Northeastern, and their minus-4.2 ratio of assists to turnovers is a coach-killer. The Patriots are usually pretty good at taking out the other team’s best scorer, but since JMU has added another dimension that a much more difficult task. Truth is, GMU doesn’t shoot well enough (41%) and does not make many threes (4.6). Will they do something in the paint with Bowles standing there?

NBA Basketball FREE PLAY: CHICAGO BULLS at BOSTON CELTICS (1/14)

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

PRO BASKETBALL — January 14

CHICAGO at BOSTON
(Celtics -6.5, Total 195) — This Celtics team kind of resembles the one that was pushed to seven games in last year’s playoffs by the Bulls, in that they are without Kevin Garnett and thus have to improvise at the power forward position. These days it appears to be with Brian Scalabrine, who has eleven points and four rebounds against New Jersey last night, with Glen Davis coming off the bench. The Bulls are nowhere near last year’s edition, although there is some progress being made, and Chicago has covered eight of its last nine games. Seven players were in double figures for Boston against the Nets, and Rajon Rondo had 14 assists in that game, so ball distribution isn’t a problem. Both teams have been shooting well – Boston has gone over 50% in its last three games, while Chicago has been 51% or better in three of its last four, Though Boston plays better defense, it’s never going to be as good without Garnett in there. Five of the last six meetings in this series have gone over the total.

NCAA Basketball FREE PLAY: FLORIDA at VANDERBILT (1/9)

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — January 9

FLORIDA at VANDERBILT
(Vanderbilt -6) — When Florida got off to an 8-0 start, with a roster that had precious little experienced leadership, and not having sufficiently replaced Nick Calathes, who bolted for Europe, I thought it was suspect, and the Gators are proving that correct, as a rather non-competitive loss to Syracuse and defeats to Richmond and South Alabama would seem to indicate. Beating Michigan State was significant, but the Spartans are often sleepwalking at the start of the season anyway. Florida is just 29% from three-point range this season, which is not like them. We prefer the Commodores, who seem to be coming on strong, and doing it with AJ Ogilvy playing a part-time role, or rather a role where he can play better in limited minutes. Mostly that’s because Festus Ezeli has been a tower of strength in the middle, especially on defense, where he’s blocked ten shots in the last three games. With freshman John Jenkins getting particularly hot (19 for 30 from arc in last five games), there may be too many people for Billy Donovan’s team to defend.

College Football FREE PLAY: NORTHWESTERN vs. AUBURN – Outback Bowl (1/1)

Friday, January 1st, 2010

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — January 1

Outback Bowl @ Tampa
NORTHWESTERN vs. AUBURN

(Auburn -8.5, Total 55) — Northwestern is one of those teams that may not look like much, but somehow is capable of pulling some rabbits out of a hat, and they are well-coached by a rising star in Pat Fitzgerald and quarterbacked by a genuine blood-and-guts leader in Mike Kafka (65.7%, 12 TD’s, 7 INT’s), who, perhaps not surprisingly, was named second-team all-conference, and has developed a connection with late bloomer Zeke Markshausen (79 catches, 774 yards). Auburn certainly owns more superlatives, including an efficient running attack that features future NFL’er Ben Tate (1254 yards) and a quarterback in Chris Todd who placed in the Top 20 in passing efficiency (21 TD’s, 6 INT’s). Northwestern has done a very solid job against opposing rushing attacks (3.7 ypc). Auburn started strong, with five straight wins, but faltered late, dropping five of its last seven contests. They seem like the fundamentally stronger side here, but if this Wildcat squad got here by scoring late-season wins over good Big Ten teams in Iowa and Wisconsin, they can manage a way to keep this game close. They’ve been very solid as a dog, covering ten of their last 13 in that role.

NFL Football FREE PLAY: BALTIMORE RAVENS at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (12/27)

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

PRO FOOTBALL — December 27

BALTIMORE at PITTSBURGH
(Steelers -3, Total 43.5) — There was something about that last-second win over Green Bay that gives us the idea the Steelers may have found at least some of their swagger, even without Troy Polamalu as part of that defense. Now at 7-7, they can pull even with the Ravens by winning. With Dennis Dixon at quarterback, Pittsburgh took the last meeting to overtime before going down to defeat. Yes, Baltimore’s stop unit (18.7 yards per point on the part of the opposition) has shown more strength, but Joe Flacco and his crew of receivers don’t have what it takes to exploit Pittsburgh’s weaknesses the way Aaron Rodgers did. Ben Roetlisberger stretches the field a lot better, and a motivated team offers a lot more resistance than the patsies Baltimore are best at beating (Chicago and Detroit, which lost by combined 79-10 to Ravens last two weeks).

College Football FREE PLAY: OHIO vs. MARSHALL – Little Ceasars Bowl (12/26)

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — December 26

Little Caesars Bowl @ Detroit
OHIO vs. MARSHALL

(Ohio -3, Total 48.5) — There is a certain Siberia for coaches to go to when they don’t want to be noticed, and that is the Mid-American Conference. It’s where Gerry Faust wound up (Akron) after he was basically run out of Notre Dame. And it is where Frank Solich, who failed in the wake of Tom Osborne’s reign at Nebraska and is now the coach at Ohio. He’s got the Bobcats playing relatively solid fundamental football, achieving some balance in the offensive game without being too devastating and getting solid play recently from quarterback Theo Scott, who threw three TD’s apiece in games against bowl-bound Northern Illinois and Temple down the stretch. Strong special teams play is highlighted by LaVon Brazill, who’s brought back three punts for touchdowns, and kicker Matt Weller, who’s made 20 of 27 field goals. The Bobcats also force a lot of turnovers, leading the entire nation with 36 takeaways. Marshall’s strength is Marshall; that is, running back Darius Marshall, who topped 1000 yards and averaged five yards a carry, but missed the last two games with an ankle injury, which will undergo a test in this game. Marshall’s 99th-ranked pass defense should be inviting for Scott, and Marshall QB Brian Anderson had better be careful with the ‘Cats secondary.
